What to Wear For Heirloom Portraits

Heirloom Portraits are a classic and timeless style of portraiture that capture who your children are in this moment. The beauty of these portraits lies in their simplicity. With no use of props, color or accessories, we’re able to make your child the main focus in both color and black and white images that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Styling your portraits is one of the most important ways to help create the look and feel of true Heirloom Portraits. Below I’ll share three tips to help guide you when selecting what to wear for your heirloom portrait session.

Select Mainly White OUTFITS

The background and vignette on Heirloom Portraits are a pure white. To keep with the traditional look, I recommend styling with white outfits. If you choose to include color, I recommend choosing outfits that are mainly white with soft pastel colors in the details. For example: Light blue or pink stitching or piping details.

Choose aN ouTFIT WITH A cOLLAR OR dETAILING

These portraits showcase children from the elbows up. The focus is on their face and expression. Try to select a top that has a color or detailing to bring the focus to their face. For older boys, this could be a plain white collard button down shirt. For younger boys, this could be a peter pan collar. For girls, you could opt for peter pan collars, bishop dresses or smocked dresses.

Include Sleeves IN OUTFITS

The portrait vignette shows the tops of shoulders, so I recommend selecting an outfit with sleeves, rather than going sleeveless. Short sleeves or long sleeves both work great.
